Toni Kroos, the esteemed Real Madrid midfielder, announced his retirement from football following this summer’s European Championship, where he will represent Germany. Since joining Real Madrid in 2014, the 34-year-old has amassed 22 trophies, including four Champions League titles and four LaLiga titles, adding to his previous Champions League triumph with Bayern Munich. Although Toni considered retiring in 2022, he decided to play an additional season, ultimately choosing to conclude his career this summer.

“After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end,” Kroos revealed on Instagram. He extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported him, particularly the Madridistas. “I am happy and proud that I found the right timing for my decision,” Kroos remarked, emphasizing his desire to end his career on a high note.

In February, Toni announced his return to the German national team for the Euros, having retired from international duty in 2021. His decision to retire has surprised many, including those close to the Real Madrid dressing room.

Real Madrid, fresh off a LaLiga victory, is set to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1. Despite the surprise, the club expressed deep appreciation for Kroos’s contributions. “We thought he’d stay, but we’re forever grateful,” a club source shared with ESPN.

Kroos confirmed his retirement on a special episode of his podcast, “Einfach mal Luppen,” stating, “I’ve been thinking about it for months, and it’s what I want. … I want you to remember that I went out at my best.”

Real Madrid issued a statement honoring Toni, acknowledging his profound impact on the club. “Toni Kroos arrived at our club in 2014 and has been a fundamental player in one of the most successful periods in Real Madrid’s history,” the statement read.

Kroos started his professional journey with Bayern Munich, debuting in September 2007 and winning the Champions League in 2013 before moving to Madrid. He formed a legendary midfield trio with Luka Modric and Casemiro at Real Madrid. Reflecting on his career, Kroos consistently stated, “I won’t go anywhere else. I’ll retire here.”
