Madhavi Raje Scindia, the mother of Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and the former Rajmata of the Gwalior Royal Family, passed away on Wednesday at 9:28 am. She had been on a ventilator for several days and was undergoing treatment at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi for the past two months due to pneumonia and sepsis, as stated by Jyotiraditya Scindia’s office. Her last rites will be held in Gwalior.

Prominent figures including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed their condolences. Gadkari conveyed his sorrow on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “The news of the demise of Madhavi Raje Scindia ji, mother of Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia ji, is extremely sad. My heartfelt tribute to her. May God grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to Shri Jyotiraditya ji and his family. Om Shanti.” Choudhary similarly shared his condolences, stating, “Very sad! It is deeply saddening to hear about the demise of the mother of Honorable Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of Civil Aviation in the Central Government. May God grant peace to the departed soul. My condolences are with the Honorable Aviation Minister and his family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!”

Madhavi Raje Scindia was married to Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia II, a distinguished Congress veteran and former Union Civil Aviation Minister, who tragically died in a plane crash near Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri on September 30, 2001. Her heritage is significant, as she was the daughter of the Army General of Madhesh Province in Nepal and the great-granddaughter of Juddha Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, the Prime Minister of Nepal and Maharaja of Kaski and Lamjung. Additionally, she was a descendant of Sardar Ramakrishna Kunwar of Gorkha.

As the Rajmata of the Gwalior Royal Family, Madhavi Raje Scindia was deeply involved in philanthropic efforts. She chaired 24 charity trusts that focused on education and healthcare. She also served as the chief of the board of governors at Scindias Kanya Vidyalaya for girls. Her dedication to preserving the family’s heritage was evident through her creation of the Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia II gallery in the palace museum.

Her passing signifies the end of an era for the Gwalior Royal Family and the various charitable organizations she championed, leaving behind a profound legacy of service and dedication to her community.
