Unveiling a New Era in the Lok Sabha Polls 2024 Phase 4
In the current Lok Sabha election of 2024, voting is in progress for the Srinagar constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant event as the region participates in its first major election since the repeal of Article 370, which previously conferred special status to the state. The Srinagar Lok Sabha seat encompasses Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Pulwama districts along with portions of Budgam and Shopian districts, with a total of 17.48 lakh eligible voters. Commencing at 7 am, this phase constitutes part of the broader fourth round across India’s 96 Lok Sabha constituencies, featuring over 1,700 candidates. Notably, Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape underwent transformation post-Article 370’s annulment, resulting in the division of the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, consequently eliminating a separate Lok Sabha constituency for Ladakh.
In this electoral contest, the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party emerge as prominent contenders for the Srinagar seat. Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, a significant Shia leader and former minister, represents the National Conference, while Waheed Para, the youth president of the PDP, stands as their candidate. Amidst this electoral fervor, concerns arise over the alleged harassment and unlawful detention of PDP workers, as voiced by Mehbooba Mufti, the party’s chief, in a letter addressed to the Election Commission. Consequently, heightened security measures have been implemented at polling booths across Srinagar, ensuring the integrity and safety of the electoral process. Additionally, provisions have been made for migrant voters from the Kashmir Division, with 26 special polling stations established in Jammu, Delhi, and Udhampur District to facilitate their participation in the electoral exercise.
