Priyanka Gandhi Set for Electoral Debut in Kerala
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a key figure in the Indian National Congress, is set to contest her first Lok Sabha election from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala. This follows her brother Rahul Gandhi’s recent decision to vacate the seat, having won both Wayanad and Raebareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Rahul opted to retain Raebareli, a traditional bastion of the Gandhi family, thus paving the way for Priyanka’s political debut in Wayanad. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced this decision, with Priyanka expressing her readiness to take on the new role. She stated, “I am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad and I will not let them feel his (Rahul Gandhi’s) absence.”
Priyanka also highlighted her longstanding connection with Raebareli and Amethi, assuring that she would support her brother in these regions while focusing on her new constituency. Rahul Gandhi, reflecting on his emotional bond with Wayanad, described the decision as challenging. He praised the people of Wayanad for their unwavering support over the past five years, committing to continue his visits and uphold the promises made. “The last five years as a member of Parliament from Wayanad have been a very fantastic and enjoyable experience. The people of Wayanad gave me support, energy to fight in a very difficult time. I will never forget that,” he remarked.
The decision was solidified during a meeting at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence, attended by senior Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, and Priyanka Gandhi. This strategic move is aimed at bolstering the party’s representation and influence in Kerala. Rahul Gandhi emphasized that both Raebareli and Wayanad would benefit from dedicated parliamentary representation, promising that the Gandhi family would remain actively involved in both constituencies. Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into the electoral arena from Wayanad is seen as a significant step for the Congress party, reflecting its strategic efforts to strengthen its foothold in southern India.
