Thibaut Courtois and Chus Mateo led the first day of White Week at the Universidad Pública Real Madrid Graduate School. Emilio Butragueño, Real Madrid’s director of Institutional Relations, moderated the session. Courtois emphasized, “Overcoming adversity requires confidence and self-belief. Professionalism in your work is crucial. Many will remember your football career, but your daily conduct will leave a lasting impression.”

Lessons from a Major Injury

“Maintaining a positive outlook is essential. In August, I was devastated after a cruciate ligament injury, the worst for any footballer. Yet, I decided to work hard and come back stronger. My approach was to stay positive, fight, and never give up. Despite doubts about my return, I knew my season wasn’t over.”

Real Madrid’s Distinctive Influence

“Externally, Real Madrid’s grandeur is visible, but being inside reveals its true impact on global football. Competing for the Champions League every year, Real Madrid is the best club worldwide. Its influence is immense, especially noticeable when traveling globally.”

Memorable Career Moments

“Two moments stand out. One was a game against Galatasaray, where key saves boosted my confidence. The other was winning the Champions League final against Liverpool, making numerous saves and being named man of the match – a highlight in my football career.”

Chus Mateo on White Week

Chus Mateo inaugurated White Week 2024, discussing excellence: “Managing Real Madrid, with its high demands, is challenging, but I’ve learned much from my colleagues. The blend of experience and talent is essential. The group’s effort is paramount. Real Madrid always comes first, and reaching the Final Four is due to collective effort.”

Values at Real Madrid

“Joining Real Madrid reveals its vast scale and relentless spirit. The club instills a never-give-up attitude. Watching their football and basketball teams, you see miracles unique to this club. This spirit fosters lasting success, unlike other clubs where it might be fleeting. Our play-off win over Partizan last year was because we fought to the end.”

Success Tips

“Hard work is fundamental. Failure also leads to growth as losing shapes you. My advice is not to force outcomes. Dedication and prioritizing important things are key. Success happens naturally; it shouldn’t be rushed. Be prepared to seize opportunities when they arise.”

Additional Speakers at White Week

The first day of White Week also featured Francisco Panadero, Director of Infrastructures and Asset Development at Real Madrid, discussing asset development. Pilar Jericó, president of BeUp and a visiting professor from Georgetown, shared insights on essential leadership.
