On Monday evening, Senior BJP figure Sushil Modi passed away at Delhi’s All-India Institute of Medical Sciences after battling cancer. The 72-year-old had been under treatment in AIIMS’ intensive care unit for the past month.

Formerly a prominent figure within the BJP in Bihar, he withdrew from the ongoing Lok Sabha elections due to deteriorating health. He conveyed this decision through social media on April 3, revealing, “I have been grappling with cancer for the last 6 months. Now, I feel compelled to share this with everyone. I won’t be able to contribute to the Lok Sabha elections. I have apprised the Prime Minister of everything. Forever grateful and committed to the nation, Bihar, and the party.”

His absence reverberated particularly strongly in Bihar, where he had amassed significant clout within the party over three decades. Serving as Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister in two terms spanning 11 years from 2005 to 2020, he played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s political landscape alongside Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The news of Sushil Modi’s passing elicited mourning from several senior BJP figures, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Ravi Shankar Prasad. Amit Shah expressed his sorrow, acknowledging Sushil Modi’s contributions to Bihar’s politics and his advocacy for the marginalized. BJP Chief JP Nadda hailed Sushil Modi’s unwavering dedication to Bihar’s progress and his instrumental role in steering the state forward.

Rajnath Singh also paid homage to his efforts towards Bihar’s development, while former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi extended condolences, emphasizing Sushil Modi’s contributions as Deputy Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP.

Even political adversaries such as Tejashwi Yadav and Mamata Banerjee extended condolences, recognizing Sushil Modi’s significance in Bihar politics and his commitment to public service.

Sushil Modi’s passing signifies the end of a chapter in Bihar’s political narrative, leaving behind a legacy of service and commitment that will resonate with many.
